Meet Our Team! Miao Cui Principal Investigator Miao (she/her/hers) received her B.S. and M.S. in Biology from Nanjing University in China, where her studies focused on insect taxonomy and the Evo-Devo of a peculiar marine species called amphioxus. She went on to pursue her Ph.D. at the California Institute of Technology in the laboratory of Dr. Eric Davidson studying sea urchin embryogenesis. During this time, she developed a profound interest in the logical principles governing developmental processes, particularly through gene regulatory networks. Her postdoctoral training, focusing on neonatal heart regeneration, was carried out in Dr. Eric Olson's laboratory at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and was awarded for a NIH K99/R00 (NHLBI) career transition grant. Beyond her scientific pursuits, Miao finds joy in expressing her creativity through various forms of painting. You can explore her artwork here: https://miao-cui.com/art-gallery/ Kathryn Berg Postdoctoral Fellow Kathryn completed her PhD in 2024 in the Yale University department of Genetics under the mentorship of Martina Brueckner. Her doctoral work focused on the intersection between intracardiac mechanosensation and early valve development. She's interested in continuing to study early cardiogenesis in the Cui Lab by exploring the spatiotemporal patterning of myocyte regenerative potential in neonatal mice. Outside of lab you can find Kathryn singing acapella, scoping out free coffee/food and cuddling with her two kitties. Lakindu Pathira Kankanamge Postdoctoral Fellow Lakindu completed her Ph.D. in Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Northeastern University, Boston, MA in 2023. She is passionate about the molecular world. Hence her research was based on mainly learning molecular mechanisms and discovering molecular biomarkers related to diseases. During her Ph.D she studied mainly DNA polymerase kappa and Haloacid dehalogenases under the guidance of Prof. Beuning and Prof. Ondrechen. She is excited to carry out studies on gene expression, gene regulation, and identifying novel biomarkers in heart related diseases. Outside of the lab, Lakindu enjoys pop and country music, concerts, reading books, watching movies and capturing scenic moments. Hyunji An Graduate Student Hyunji is a Ph.D. student in the Biomedical and Biological Sciences (BBS) program and is co-mentored between Drs. Marcia Haigis and Miao Cui laboratories. She graduated from the University of Seoul in South Korea with a Bachelor’s in Environmental Horticulture and a Master’s in Life Science. She believes in the impact of interdisciplinary studies and studied plasmonic nanoparticles for bio-sensing and bio-imaging during her master’s under the supervision of Dr. Inhee Choi. She worked as a research trainee in the lab of Dr. Luke P. Lee at Harvard Medical School, where she developed her interest in biomedical research. She is currently interested in exploring heart regeneration from metabolic perspectives. Outside the lab, Hyunji writes books about plants and enjoys traveling, bouldering, playing board games, listening to live music, and being in nature. Eddie Padilla Graduate Student Eddie is a graduate student in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) program at Harvard Medical School. Prior to Harvard, Eddie received a B.S in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Los Angeles where he conducted research under Dr. Volker Hartenstein studying synapses in the aging brain in Drosophila. Afterwards, he was a lab manager in Dr. Timothy O’Sullivan’s lab studying dendritic cell’s role in sterile injury and natural killer cell metabolism and role in cancer. Eddie is interested in understanding the heart from a genetic and immunological perspective and hopes to branch out into other disciplines like metabolism and epigenetics to further understand cardiac regeneration. Outside of the lab, Eddie can be caught exploring the northeast with his friends, taking photos with his polaroid or film camera, or yapping. Saradha Miriyala Research Assistant Saradha (she/her) is from central New Jersey and graduated from Brown University with an Sc.B in Neuroscience in 2023. At Brown, she worked in the Tapinos Lab where she studied the role of RNA helicases in glioblastoma multiforme progression and worked on the development of a novel glioblastoma drug delivery platform. In the lab, she uses spatial transcriptomics to study secreted signaling driving proliferation of regenerative neonatal cardiomyocytes. Outside of the lab, Saradha enjoys making pottery, reading fiction, and exploring Boston and Providence, RI with her friends. Kiyana Gallagher Undergraduate Student Kiyana is a rising junior at Harvard University majoring in bioengineering. Her dad is in the military so she have moved around her whole life, currently her family is in Virginia, so when she am not at school or lab, she is enjoying time with her family in Springfield. During her time in the Cui lab she has grown a deep interest in cardiology as well as tissue regeneration and plans to pursue this interest in medical school. In her free time she enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading and going to the beach! Karen Lu Undergraduate Student Karen Lu (she/her) is a rising junior at Boston University, studying biology with a specialization in cellular biology, molecular biology, and genetics. She is from Seattle, Washington and currently has a strong interest in pediatrics and family medicine. In her free time, she enjoys reading, playing tennis, and exploring Boston with friends. Anthony Trinindad Undergraduate Student Anthony is an undergraduate student at Northeastern University majoring in biochemistry and minoring in public health. During his time at the Cui Lab, he has developed a growing interest in uncovering genes that can be used as a pathway to develop revolutionary human therapeutics. After graduation, he plans on becoming an equitable physician-scientist. Anthony enjoys exploring new cafes with friends and listening to music in his free time. Dylan Yee Undergraduate Student (COACH Intern) Dylan is a rising sophomore at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and an intern at Boston Children's Hospital through the COACH program. He is interested in studying tissue regeneration and how such treatments can help improve cardiovascular and heart attack treatment AlumniGabriel O.
